The native of Kittanning, Pa., graduated from Thomas Jefferson Medical College of Philadelphia in 1966 and interned at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital before entering the Army Medical Corps in July 1971. The 27year-old captain was sent to Vietnam, where he was battalion surgeon for the 299th Engineer Battalion. Whiteman died on Oct.19, 1971.
