Walters joined the Marine Corps in December 1966 after leaving William Penn High School. He was sent to Vietnam in March 1968 and assigned to the Mortar Battery of the 1st Battalion, 13th Marines, Walters died aboard the hospital ship USS Sanctuary off Vietnam on Aug. 18, 1968. The lance corporal was 18 years old. Survivors included his mother.
