All city fire stations were draped in black after the 21-year-old Army staff sergeant died near Da Nang, Quang Nam Province, Vietnam, on June 19, 1969. The team leader had been assigned to Company C of the 2nd Battalion, 501st Infantry, 173rd Airborne Brigade. "Algi" Wall, a 1965 Northeast Catholic High School graduate, had left Ladder 30 on Ridge Avenue at Cinnaminson Street to enter the service "We spent hours dreaming of our future and the eight kids we would have someday," recalled his fiancée. Wall was the second Philadelphia firefighter to die in the war. Survivors included his parents, a brother and four Sisters. Wall was one of at least 11 young men from the FishtownKensington-Port Richmond neighborhoods to die or be missing in action in Vietnam.
