"Jerry" Wahlen graduated from Thomas Edison High School in January 1963 and worked as an apprentice machinist for Technitrol Corp. on Allegheny Avenue for 2 1/2 years before being drafted into the Army in September 1965. He enjoyed playing basketball and baseball. Wahlen was sent to Vietnam in June 1966, where he was a grenadier in B Troop of the 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry. The 22-year-old specialist four died on Feb. 16, 1967, near Hoi An, Quang Nam Province, as a result of fragment wounds to the back of the head suffered when truck in which he was riding was shelled. Wahlen was survived by his parent and a brother.
