Valunas was raised in Vienna, Austria, and graduated from the American School there in 1966. He entered the Army in Philadelphia and was sent to Vietnam, where the sergeant was assigned to Company B of the 3rd Battalion, 8th Infantry, 4th Infantry Division, Valunas, a senior scout observer, died on March 24, 1969, at the age of 20. Survivors included his mother.
