Sweeney attended Northeast High School, where he was an avid follower of sports, before entering the Army in August 1970. The 21-year-old corporal, a ranger with Company N (Rangers), 75th Infantry, 173rd Airborne Brigade, died in Vietnam on May 29, 1971. He was survived by his parents, two brothers and a sister.
