Strothers enlisted in the Army in 1963 after attending Overbrook High School and working as a busboy in a hotel and restaurant. He planned to make the Army a career, and dreamed of buying his mother a home of her own. When Strothers was killed in Vietnam on May 1, 1968, the 23-year-old sergeant was temporarily commanding a unit which had lost its lieutenant and another sergeant in a previous battle. He was posthumously awarded the Silver Star for rushing and destroying an enemy position. Strothers had been assigned to Company B of the 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry, 25th Infantry Division. Survivors included his parents. a brother and three sisters.
