Stafford loved sports and played football and basketball and swam at West Philadelphia High School. He joined the Army in June 1965, a year and a half after finishing school. The 21-year-old private first class, a grenadier, was sent to Vietnam and assigned to Company A of the 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile). He died in ation at Plol Mo on Aug. 8, 1966. Survivors included his parents, a brother and three sisters.
