Ray "Smitty" Smith was active in several sports at Roxborough High School, Described in his senior yearbook as "a man of many muscles," he was honorable mention All-Public football defensive safety in 1965 and was one of eight Class of 1966 seniors to be norninated for Roxborough's top senior athletic award, Smith hoped to become a carpenter before entering the Army in August 1966. The 20-year-old sergeant, an automatic rifleman and squad leader, was sent to Vietnam in December 1967 and assigned to Company C of the 2nd Battalion, 501st Infantry, 101st Air-borne Division. Smith died on April 26, 1968. He was survived by his mother, two brothersand a sister.
