Singletary left Thomas Edison High School in March 1966, and in August of that year enlisted in the Army. He had begun a scrapbook on Vietnam while still in school, and his parents felt that he might become a career soldier. Singletary was ordered to Vietnam in February 1967 and assigned to Company D of the 39th Engineer Battalion. The 19-year-old Pioneer scout was killed May 11, 1967, while looking for enemy land mines. He was survived by his parents, a brother and sister.
