"Tony" Sawicki joined the Marine Corps a week after graduating from Frankford High School, where teachers remember him as a good student supportive of many school programs. An annual outstanding student award is presented each year at the school in Sawicki's name. The 19-year-old lance corporal, a rifleman, was sent to Vietnam and assigned to the 3rd Battalion of the 26th Marines. Sawicki was killed near Quang Tri, Vietnam, on Sept. 10, 1967, by fragments from an enemy mortar shell. He was engaged to be married. He was survived by his parents, a sister and brother.
