The 31-year-old sergeant first class had served in the Army from 1953-1957, re-enlisted in 1967 and volunteered for duty in Vietnam. Sandberg was a military policeman during his first stint in the service. and worked as an auto mechanic and valve assembler for over six years before reenlisting. He was an operations and platoon sergeant in Vietnam with Company E of the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry, 199th Light Infantry Brigade. Sandberg died on May 13, 1968. Survivors included his wife, a son and daughter. The Army Reserve Center at the Pedricktown (N.J.) Support Facility was re-dedicated in honor of Sandberg and Francis Slevers Jr. of Philadelphian, who died in Vietnam on March 16, 1969.
