Salley was a 1965 graduate of John Bartram High School, where he was a member of the athletic and student associations. He entered the Army in November 1965 and was Sent to Vietnam in May 1966, where he was assigned to Company C of the 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile). The 20-year-old private first class, a rifleman, died in action on May 29, 1966. He was survived by his parents, two brothers and one sister.
