Nesmith lived in South Carolina most of his life and moved to Philadelphia in the mid- 1960's, He entered the Marine Corps in March 1969. The private first class, a rifleman, went to Vietnam in August and was assigned to Company E of the 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division. Nesmith died in Quang Nam Province on Nov.11, 1969, at the age of 23. He was survived by his parents, two brothers and four sisters.
