The 20-year-old seaman apprentice took great pride in the Navy and his ship, the cruiser USS Newport News. Moore enlisted in the Navy in December 1971 after graduating from Frankford High School. He was assigned to the large guns on the Newport News as a turret loader, and died aboard the ship in the Gulf of Tonkin off Vietnam on Oct. 1, 1972, during the blockade of the North Vietnamese port of Haiphong. Moore was the last Navy veteran from Philadelphia to die in Vietnam. He was survived by his parents, a brother and two sisters.
