Miezkowski attended Tomas Edison High School before enlisting in the Marine Corps in December 1964. The 19-year old corporal was a rifleman with the 3rd Battalion of the 9th Marines, 3rd Marine Division, in Vietnam, dying near Khe Sanh, Quang Tri Province, on April 30, 1967. He was one of six Philadelphia veterans to die in Vietnam on that date, the most on any day in the war. Mieczkowski was survived by his parents and a brother.
