McCreight attended Germantown High School in the early 1950s before beginning a career in the Marine Corps. The 29-year-old gunnery sergeant was a combat engineer with Company D of the 7th Engineer Battalion in Vietnam. He was wounded during heavy fighting on Dec. 19, 1966, in Da Nang, and died aboard the hospital ship USS Repose. Survivors include his wife.
