Martinez left Edison High School in February 1967 and enlisted in the Marine Corps. He was first a rifleman and later a cook in Vietnam, and was assigned to Headquarters and Service Company of the 3rd Battalion, 9th Marines, and 3rd Marine Division. Martinez died in Quang Tri Province on Feb. 27, 1969, after being hospitalized for an apparent overdose of malaria tablets. The 20-year-old private first class was survived by his parents, two brothers and three sisters.
