"Jerry" Maguire led a full life, whether on the sandlot baseball diamonds of Kensington or in the highlands of Vietnam. lie wrote home often exclaiming of the beauty of Vietnam and his fondness for the people, especially the children. He bad entered the Army in April 1966 after graduating from Thomas Edison High School. The 20-year-old private first class, a rifleman, was assigned to Company B of the 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry. 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile). Maguire died in Bong Son, Binh Dinh Province, on Jan. 30, 1967. The playground at Mascber Street and Lehigh Avenue where he had often played was renamed the Gerald J. Maguire Play-ground in his memory, and may be the first public facility in Philadelphia to have been named for a Vietnam veteran. He was survived by his parents, a brother and two sisters.
