"Fred" Lynch had a keen sense of humor and a deep love for his family. He attended Father Judge and Frankford high schools, and was in an honor guard at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, before enlisting in the Marine Corps in 1962 at the age of 17 during the Cuban missile crisis. The 21-year-old lance corporal, a messenger, was assigned to Company I of the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division. He died in Quang Ngai Province, Vietnam, on March 5, 1966, with 45 days remaining on his four-year enlistment. Survivors included his parents and three sisters.
