"He really enjoyed the status of "the big brother, Hershey's sister remembered. When his youngest sister cut her own hair, he told her she was "the prettiest girl on the block," When another sister didn't like her prom date, he fixed her up with his best friend. Once, when speaking to his family from a hospital ship in Vietnam, he asked if his brother was practicing baseball. "Chickie" Hershey graduated from West Catholic High School in 1965. He worked at Maura's hardware Store in Manayunk, and attended Drexel Institute of Technology at night. He was engaged to be married when he enlisted in the Army in April 1967. The 21-year-old sergeant was a squad leader in Company A of the 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), in Vietnam. He died in Quang Tri Province on Nov. 13, 1968. He was posthumously awarded the Silver Star. Survivors included his father, a brother and three sisters.
