After graduating from Father Judge High School in 1964, Grassi attended an IBM school for a year and a half. He worked as a computer programmer for Union Fidelity Life Insurance Co. before enlisting in the Marine Corps in September 1966. The 21-year-old corporal, a rifleman assigned to Company A of the 1st Battalion, 26th Marines, 3rd Marine Division, died on June 15, 1968, near Da Nang, Quang Nam Province, Vietnam. He was survived by his parents and a sister.
