Garvey enlisted in the Army on his 18th birthday and planned a military career. The 18-year-old private first class, an assistant gunner, was assigned to Company A of the 2nd Battalion, 502nd infantry, 1st Brigade, 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam. He died on Oct. 7, 1966, near Tuy Hoa when an artillery round fired by friendly forces exploded near him. Garvey graduated from Cardinal Dougherty High School in 1965. He was survived by his parents, a brother and a sister.
