Gartland attended Roman Catholic High School and Verona (N.J.) High School before enlisting in the Marine Corps in 1967. The lance corporal was sent to Vietnam in March 1968, where he was a driver in the Headquarters and Service Company of the 3rd Amphibious Tractor Battalion, 1st Marine Division. He died in Quang Nam Province on May 5, 1968, at the age of 18. Survivors included his father, two brothers and two sisters.
