Marines are 10 times tougher than John Wayne makes them look, Gallman told his mother. He enlisted in February 1965, a month after graduating from West Philadelphia High School. He was active with the school chess and debating clubs and very fond of his boxer dog, Sunny. The 20-year-old lance corporal, an ammunition carrier with Company A of the 1st Battalion, 9th Marines, 3rd Marine Division, died in Quang Tri Province, Vietnam, on March 24, 1967, during Operation Prarie III. Survivors included his mother and two stepbrothers.
