"Butch" Exum left Overbrook High School in May 1966, several weeks before he was to graduate, and joined the Army. He was sent to Vietnam in. September 1966 and worked at the Post Exchange in Nha Trang. The private first class, a gunner assigned to the 173rd As-sault Helicopter Company, died in a helicopter crash on June 3. 1967, six days before his 20th birthday. Exum was survived by his father, stepmother, two brothers and a sister.
