"Tommy" Dean was a gifted athlete, capping outstanding scholastic careers in soccer, basketball and baseball by being on John Bartram High School's 1963 city championship baseball team. He told his parents be had enlisted in the Marine Corps and volunteered for Vietnam because he felt it was necessary to do so before he went on to college. The 20-year-old lance corporal, a rifleman assigned to Cornpany A of the 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division, had been on several search-and-destroy missions before being severely wounded. He died at a Navy hospital in the Philippines on Memorial Day 1967. Dean was survived by his father and a sister.
