Cornwell, a private first class joined the Marine Corps in August, 1966 and was assigned to Company D of the 1st Battalion, 4th Marines, 3rd Marine Division in Vietnam in April 1967. The 21-year-old rifleman died in Quang Tri Province three weeks later, on May 8, 1967.
