"Kenny" Cheek was an active churchgoer, and was recalled by a friend as a “kind, considerate and strong young man . . . ambitious and sincere, always willing to help.” He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1966 and planned to have a career in the military. The lance corporal, an ammunition carrier with Company A of Battalion Landing Team 1, 9th Marine Amphibious Brigade, died in Quang Tri Province, Vietnam, on May 18, 1.967. He was 18. He was survived by his parents and a brother.
