Chatburn liked boxing, playing pinball and singing with friends on street corners. He left a big family, his fiancée and his job at an auto parts store when he enlisted in the Marine Corps in July 1968. The 20-year-old private first class, an ammunition handler, was shipped to Vietnam in January 1969 and joined Company I of the 3rd Battalion, 26th Marines, 9th Marine Amphibious Brigade. He died in Quang Nam Province of wounds from friendly mortar fire on March 16, 1969. The former Germantown High School student was survived by his parents, three brothers and three sisters.
