"The last six months have been hell," Carter wrote home from Vietnam. The 23-year-old Marine rifleman bad taken part in several search-and-destroy missions before he was killed in Da Nang on June 30, 1967. He had been assigned to Company B of the 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division. Carter had attended Thomas Edison High School and worked for a cabinetmaker before enlisting in October 1962. He was survived by his parents, a brother and a sister.
