After graduating from Thomas Edison High School in 1966, Carter attended computer training school and worked as a packer. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in January 1968 and was sent to Vietnam that June. The private first class, a rifleman assigned to cornpany M of the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marines, 3rd Marine Division, died in Quang Tri Province on Sept. 10, 1968 at the age of 19. He was survived by his parents, two brothers, and a sister.
