Carroll enlisted in the Army after leaving Benjamin Franklin High School because he could not find satisfying work. "Everywhere he went . . . they'd just offer him dishwasher jobs" explained his mother. The 19-year-old specialist four was assigned to the 118th As-sault Helicopter Company. He wrote home asking for prayers after he killed four Viet Cong. including a woman. Carroll died on September 3, l967, the day Nguyen Van Thieu was elected president of South Vietnam. Carroll was killed when the helicopter in which he was a gunner crashed and burned. He was on his second tour of duty in Vietnam and was engaged to be married. Survivors include his mother and several brothers and sisters.
