Even amidst combat, Carr found Vietnam to be a beautiful country. He wrote home often about his encounters with the Vietnamese, and delighted in talking to children and teaching them English. The 21-year-old Army private, first class, an assistant gunner, was assigned to Company A of the 4th Battalion, 12th Infantry, 199th Infantry Brigade. Carr was killed on May 3, 1957, when his platoon was trapped by Viet Cong forces. He was post-humously awarded the Silver Star for divert-lug fire toward himself to enable his platoons to overrun the enemy position. Carr was an Edward Bok Vocational Technical High School graduate and had worked as a machinist at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard before being drafted in November 1965. He was survived by his parents, a brother and four sisters.
