A former Germantown High School student, Burke entered the Army in March 1965 and was sent to Vietnam the following May. The specialist four, a rifleman and grenadier with Company A of the 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry, 1st Brigade, 101st Airborne Division, was killed at Quang Dak Sut on July 7, 1966, when a mine detonated as he was giving first aid to another soldier. Burke was 18 years old. He was survived by his mother and stepfather.
