Brookins attended Thomas Edison High School and enjoyed playing guitar. He was drafted into the Army in June 1965 and sent to Vietnam, where be was assigned to the 610th Transportation Company. The private first class, a clerk-typist, died on Dec. 31, 1966. He was 22. He was survived by his wife, a son, two daughters, parents, three brothers and four sisters.
