Specialist four Bitting worked in a sweater-knitting mill on Frankford Avenue before enlisting in the Army in August 1966. He was stationed in Germany for a year before being assigned to Company C of the 1st Battalion, 7th cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) in Vietnam in March 1968. The 20-year-old grenadier and rifleman died less than a month later on April 25, 1968. He was survived by his parents, a brother and a sister.
