Behan enlisted in the Army after graduating from Cardinal Dougherty High School in 1963 and working as a machinist for three years. He got married and shipped out to Vietnam during the 1967 Christmas holiday season for assignment with Company C of the 3rd Battalion, 60th Infantry, 9th Infantry Division. "Everything's fine. Put in your application so you will be sure to be with me in Hawaii," he wrote in his last letter to his new bride. The 22-year-old specialist four, a rifleman, died on May 10. 1968, the day the first round of peace talks between the United States and North Vietnam opened in Paris. Behan was survived by his wife, parents, three brothers and a sister.
